Relational Leadership: The Key to Capturing Kids’ Hearts
Saturday May 3, 2025 8:15am - 9:15am PDT
Leaders, teachers, and students face unique challenges every day, which is why it is so important to create a campus environment that fosters safety, connection, and well-being at all levels.

We believe, “if you have a child’s heart, you have a child’s mind.” If teachers create a relational connection to students, or “Capture Kids’ Hearts®,” performance accelerates, and behaviors greatly improve because kids want to be in school. The same can be said of leadership and all staff who face challenges. When school culture is built on relationships that tend to overall well-being, it is proven that campuses, districts, and entire communities can be transformed.

The Neuroscience of Co-Regulation and Teacher Well-Being
Saturday May 3, 2025 8:15am - 9:15am PDT
In this session, we will delve into the fascinating world of neuroscience to explore how co-regulation—when educators and students manage emotions together—can profoundly impact both student outcomes and adult well-being. Understanding the neural mechanisms behind co-regulation can empower educational leaders with tools to build stronger, more supportive relationships with students and teachers within systems, while simultaneously enhancing their own emotional resilience.

Participants will gain insights into how the brain responds to emotional interactions and how to foster a co-regulatory environment that nurtures both personal well-being and academic success. We will examine the latest research on the brain’s emotional systems, the role of mirror neurons, and how stress and emotion impact learning. Through practical strategies, educators will learn how to regulate their own emotional responses in challenging moments, how to support students’ emotional needs, and how to create an atmosphere that fosters mutual regulation.

Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of how the brain operates and with strategies to enhance well-being, improve school & classroom climate, and ultimately support student growth through effective co-regulation.

Title IX Compliance
Saturday May 3, 2025 8:15am - 9:15am PDT
Title IX is the federal regulation that requires schools to protect against sex-based discrimination, including protections against sexual misconduct.  In addition to the federal regulations related to Title IX, California law includes several laws that supplement and overlap the requirements established by Title IX.  Collectively, these requirements require school districts to develop and implement a process to address sexual misconduct, that includes an intake process for reports of sexual misconduct, a grievance procedure to investigate reports, and a process to redress sexual misconduct.

Recent litigation, as well as the incoming new Presidential administration, has created changes in the Title IX regulations but have not yet affected California requirements. This presentation will summarize the current status of Title IX and provide practical guidance to help school districts ensure their current sexual misconduct process complies with current federal and California law.

Developing Meaningful Days That Build Culture and Recalibrate Rigorous Expectations
Saturday May 3, 2025 10:45am - 11:45am PDT
In this session, attendees will hear first hand from a 900-student LEA how they reinvented their staff professional development to focus on building high-quality relationships with staff with a focus on educational excellence for students. Through intentional work using the Community of Practice model, the LEA built a year-round structure that develops staff as leaders, includes all members of the staff from custodians to administration, teachers and registrars, and puts the focus on students. In the aftermath of both the Camp Fire of 2018 and the pandemic, the school was struggling with staff morale, school culture, and student academics. Knowing something had to change, and quickly, the school reinvented professional development and focused their energy in two areas: 1. high-quality culture and 2. academic excellence. The school is now completing year three of this work and the outcomes are incredible!

Saturday May 3, 2025 1:30pm - 2:30pm PDT

These interviews focused on changes and strategies for supporting, recruiting, and retaining K-12 science teachers.

This session will highlight key themes emerging from the empathy interviews, particularly regarding teacher retention. It will also explore strategies to build capacity among teachers across the school setting. Additionally, we will discuss the importance of administrators developing systems to support early-career teachers and how they can leverage both anecdotal and formal experiences of teacher leaders to strengthen retention efforts.
